To niche or not to niche …

When I started my private practice the overwhelming advice I was given was to choose a niche and stick with it. If you are like me and have an array of interests or know that your interests are bound to change, this was really tricky for me to pin down. Right when I thought I had landed on something specific I would be working with a client and we’d start a whole new exploration that was meaningful and important, or something would shift in their life (a death, a change, a diagnosis, some other obstacle) and because we had a trusted relationship we would pivot and I would support them on this new path.

I realized that having a niche and referring out everything else didn’t align with my values as a psychotherapist.

I love being a psychotherapist because I get to have meaningful conversations with people and help them feel not so alone with the challenges of their life. A strong therapeutic relationship is so essential to success in therapy, and the practice that I have created reflects this value.

Whether or not a person is a long term client that I see regularly over years, or a short term client where we focus on a single goal – I let every client know that “once a client, always a client”. Because we have established a strong therapeutic relationship they are welcome to reach out at any time in their future, whether it is weeks, months or even years from now.

So now, I liken my “niche” to that of a family doctor – the person who knows you, who you feel comfortable and safe calling up when you feel distress, who is trained and experienced with issues across the lifespan, and who can help refer you to specialists when needed. I love being that mental health touch point in people’s lives. So whether you have a short term goal, or are looking for more long term support please feel free to reach out and we can see if working together would be a good fit.
